【Materials & MethodsのMoveとStep】
多くの研究で同じような研究方法が用いられるので、Materials & Methodsは、論文間の類似性が高い。そのため、たくさんのキーフレーズが抽出された。Materials & Methodsの分析では、小見出しごとに以下の４つのMoveはどれかに割り当てられた。

MM1では、研究デザインと研究対象について述べる。方法の概略（MM1-Step1）、研究対象の選択（MM1-Step2）、研究倫理（MM1-Step3）、役割と責任（MM1-Step4）、に分けられる。これらは、同じ小見出し内でまとめられる場合もあれば、異なる小見出しに分けられる場合もある。よく使われる小見出しとしては、「Study design and oversight」「Patients」「Study population」「Randomization」「Masking」などがある。
MM2では、具体的な研究方法について述べる。方法（MM2-Step1）や評価（MM2-Step2）について説明する。よく使われる小見出しとしては、「Procedures」「Intervention」「End points」「Outcomes」「Adverse events and safety」などがある。
MM3では、統計分析について述べる。統計分析（MM3-Step2）について述べるだけでなく、研究対象（MM3-Step1）や分析の目的（MM3-Step3）についても述べられることが多い。また、P値の基準とデータの表示方法（MM3-Step4）についても述べる。小見出しとしては、「Statistical analysis」がよく使われる。
MM4では、資金提供者の役割について述べる。Materials & Methodsは、独立した項目として示されるかどうかは、ジャーナルによって異なるので注意しよう。内容は、資金提供者の役割（MM4-Step1）と著者の責任（MM4-Step2）に分けられる。小見出しとしては、「Role of funding source」がよく用いられる。
上述したように、Materials & Methodsのセクションは、内容ごとに小見出しを立てて記述するのが一般的である。従って、まず適切な小見出し案を作り、それに従って内容を記述するとよいであろう。よく使われる代表的な小見出しをMoveごとにまとめると以下のようになる。
